Pickleball Coach Certification Singapore

PPR Level 1 certification led by Coach Gary Tan, an AFP-appointed PPR Coach Developer — one of the people the Asia Federation Pickleball has appointed to certify coaches in Singapore.

The role

Certified by a Coach Developer, not just a coach.

There is a difference between a coach who holds a certification and a coach the federation has appointed to award them.

Coach Gary is an AFP-appointed PPR Coach Developer, appointed by the Asia Federation Pickleball to deliver Professional Pickleball Registry certification in Singapore. He has headed PPR Level 1 Coach Certification courses here, including the January 2026 clinic at Singapore Expo and an earlier 2025 intake.

He brings the same role across from tennis, where he leads Sports By 5 — the official Singapore provider for PTR certification — and holds PTR Professional ratings across the Adult, Junior Development and Performance pathways as an International Tester and Clinician. Three decades of coach education sit behind how these courses are run.

Who it is for

Three kinds of candidate.

New coaches

Players turning professional

Strong club players who are already being asked to teach friends and want a recognised qualification before charging for it.

Crossover coaches

Coaches from other racquet sports

Tennis, badminton and squash coaches adding pickleball. You can already teach — the course is about what changes in this sport.

Organisations

Clubs, schools and venues

Operators who need certified staff on court and want a cohort trained together rather than sent off individually.

What you learn

Teaching the game, not just playing it.

Playing well and teaching well are different skills. The course is built around the second one.

01

Technical fundamentals

Grip, paddle face, contact point, the dink, the drop and the drive — and the vocabulary to describe each one precisely.

02

Error diagnosis

Seeing why a shot failed rather than that it failed. The single hardest skill for a new coach, and the one most assessed.

03

Feeding and drills

Feeding accurately and consistently, and building drills that progress rather than repeat.

04

Lesson structure

Planning a session with a shape to it — warm-up, technical block, live ball, close — for one player or for a group.

05

Communication

Explaining a correction to someone who has never held a paddle, in a way that changes what they do next.

Assessment

Assessed on court, not on a slideshow.

Each PPR Level 1 course closes with a practical assessment. Candidates are tested on feeding, error diagnosis, and how clearly they can explain a correction to a genuine beginner.

Questions

Frequently asked.

What is PPR certification?

The Professional Pickleball Registry is an international coaching credential for pickleball. Level 1 is the entry certification for coaches working with beginner and intermediate players.

Is Coach Gary a PPR Coach Developer?

Yes. He is appointed by the Asia Federation Pickleball to deliver PPR certification in Singapore, and has headed Level 1 courses here including the January 2026 clinic at Singapore Expo.

How good a player do I need to be?

Good enough to demonstrate the shots you will teach. You do not need to be a tournament player, but you do need reliable mechanics, because candidates are assessed on feeding and demonstration.

I coach tennis already. Does that help?

Considerably. Lesson structure, feeding and communication all transfer. The course then focuses on what is specific to pickleball — and Coach Gary leads certification in both sports, so he teaches that gap directly.

When is the next course?

Intakes are scheduled rather than continuous. Message +65 8962 8400 and you will be told the next available date.

Can you run a course for our organisation?

Yes. Private cohorts can be arranged for clubs, schools and venues that need several staff certified together. Enquire on +65 8962 8400.
