Coached by someone in your bracket.
Coach Gary Tan is a 55+ champion who is still ranked and still entering tournaments. Senior pickleball coaching in Singapore, from first paddle to competitive seniors play.
Most coaches have never played in your age group.
They can tell you what the shot should look like. They cannot tell you what it feels like to need an extra half-step, or which habits buy that half-step back.
Still entering and still winning in the senior brackets, not coaching from memory.
Ranked in the Singapore Pickleball Association Men’s Seniors (55+) singles standings, 2026.
Three decades of racquet-sports coaching behind every correction.
Senior coaching is not easier coaching.
It is different coaching. The technical standard does not drop; what changes is where the effort goes.
Position over speed
Being in the right place early is worth more than being quick. Most of the court coverage problem is solved before the ball is struck, by reading the opponent’s paddle face rather than chasing the result.
Economy of movement
Shorter steps, earlier splits, and a deliberate habit of not moving backwards. Senior players lose far more points to being pushed off the kitchen line than to a lack of pace.
Load and longevity
Technique that does not punish shoulders and knees over a long session. The aim is to still be playing well in the third game, and to still be playing in ten years.
Three starting points.
Never held a paddle
A large share of Coach Gary’s adult work is with people starting from nothing, often in their fifties and sixties. The first sessions are grip, contact point and a dink you can repeat — not match play.
Playing weekly, stuck
You can rally, you enjoy it, and you have not improved in a year. Usually one technical fault is capping everything else, and it is diagnosable in a single session.
Entering senior brackets
For players going into SPA seniors events. Third-shot decision-making, doubles patterns, and the matchplay temperament that decides tight games.

Frequently asked.
I am 60 and have never played a racquet sport. Is that a problem?
No, and it is more common than you would think. Starting without habits is often faster than starting with the wrong ones.
Is pickleball hard on the joints?
It is among the gentler racquet sports — a small court, a light paddle and a slow ball. How you are taught to move matters more than the sport itself, which is exactly what the coaching addresses.
Can my spouse or a friend join the session?
Yes. Two players of similar standard works well and splits the cost. Message +65 8962 8400 for group rates.
How long before I can play socially?
Most adults can hold a rally within a session or two. Playing socially without feeling out of your depth usually takes a handful.
Are there senior competitions in Singapore?
Yes. The Singapore Pickleball Association runs seniors brackets, including 50+ and 55+. Coach Gary competes in them, so the advice on when and what to enter is first-hand.
I played tennis for years. Will that help?
Partly. See tennis to pickleball — the swing length and court position both have to change, and knowing that in advance saves you months.
